Spain is still cheaper than most of Western Europe — but the gap has narrowed hard in the big cities, and 2020-era blog numbers will wreck your budget. Here's what things cost in 2026, starting with the number that dominates every budget: rent.
Rent: the 2026 reality

Notes that save money: long-term (12-month) contracts price well below the furnished "temporal" market that targets foreigners; landlords commonly ask for one to two months' deposit plus, on agency listings, a fee near one month; and listing prices are opening bids in slower districts — negotiate.

- Utilities (electric, water, gas, internet): €120–180 for a one-bed; summer AC and winter heating spike it.
- Groceries: €250–350 for one person cooking at home (Mercadona/Lidl baseline).
- Eating out: the menú del día — a full weekday lunch — still runs €12–16 in most neighborhoods; dinner mains €12–20.
- Public transport: €20–60/month depending on city and age discounts; Madrid and Valencia have strong youth pricing.
- Private health insurance (required for most visas): €50–120/month depending on age and coverage level.
- Phone: €10–20 for generous prepaid data.

Where your money goes furthest
If you're flexible on city, the 2026 value ranking among majors is clear: Valencia first (beach, metro, €800 rents still findable), then Seville and Zaragoza, with Madrid buying more career and Barcelona more international scene per euro. University cities — Granada, Salamanca, Murcia — run 30–40% below Madrid overall and are the budget play for the student route.
